Na Muang Waterfalls, Na Muang 1 and 2 are the most famous waterfalls in Ko Samui. If you’ve visited the beautiful waterfalls in Kanchanaburi or those in Kao Yai Natural Park, you may be slightly disappointed, but if you are only visiting Ko Samui – the waterfalls provide a pleasant outdoor twist that differs from bathing in the hotel pool or hanging on the beach.

Na Muang (purple waterfalls) is named after to color of the rocks in the area. This article will focus on Na Muang 2 which is more impressive, and slightly less visited than 1.

Na Muang 1 waterfall towers 18 meters high and is very close to the parking lot – which makes it heavily crowded, full of tourists. Na Muang 2 is taller (some 80 meters by several stairs) and set in the jungle, amidst beautiful nature yet farther from the parking area. It requires some walking and is thus less toured.

Between the 2 waterfalls, you’ll find Na Muang Safari Park where you can ride elephants and watch different animal shows (if you’d like). You can get to the park easily by car or a mini-bike. This site is a destination for many day trips, so you can expect many tourists and visitors.

Na Muang 2 is somewhat distant from the parking area and thus less toured. The easiest way to get there is by a local pickup truck that will take you up the mountain and from there some walk through the jungle – not too long, not too hard. Along the way there are stairs and narrow wood bridges that integrate in the local nature and create a special atmosphere.

The waterfall itself is more of a small pool where you can bathe, so don’t forget your swimsuit and towels. There’s a small kiosk on site, so you can buy soft drinks there, and there’s no need to carry water bottles with you. At the end of the visit, you can head down to the road in one of two paths, where you should wait for the pickup truck to take you back to the parking area.

Arrival: the waterfalls are some 40 minutes away from Chaweng beach, and 20 minutes from Lamai beach. You can easily get there independently or through the day trips that are operated by several local companies.

In conclusion: Thailand’s most impressive outdoor attractions such as waterfalls, rivers, lakes, unique temples etc., are mainly in land at the north, center and south of the country, whereas the islands are more suitable for laid-back vacations. If you’ve visited the beautiful waterfalls in Kanchanaburi or Kao Yai National Park, if you’ve traveled through the north or south – you may be slightly disappointed. However, Ko Samui waterfalls still provide a pleasant outdoor twist that differs from bathing in the hotel pool or hanging on the beach.
